Graphite / Carbon / Charcoal
| One of my favorite
mediums to work with is Graphite. It is my preferred medium for miniature work, but I
also do a lot of 'normal' sized work in it as well.
Graphite is very versatile- which explains it's popularity. It can be used for anything from a quick sketch to a highly detailed, photorealistic drawing. It requires a minimum in equipment, just a pencil and something to make a mark on. Amazing results can be had with one grade of pencil, a little patience, and a skilled, trained hand. Because of it's portability, I am seldom without my Graphite 'tools'. I carry a sketchbook with me most places- It is a great way to kill time, and also remain productive. When I travel, I bring my mechanical pencils with me, and work on my Miniatures. That way, I don't have any downtime! |

I also like to mix other drawing materials in with my
graphite work. Carbon and charcoal add dimension and depth to work, as
they reflect light in a totally different manner than graphite.
Interesting effects can be made by layering graphite on top of carbon or
charcoal, and also by blending the three.

| The following are some recent drawings, done in Graphite, Charcoal, Carbon, or some combination of the three. I have also done a lot of graphite drawings of parrots, which are display separately HERE. Also, don't forget to check out my Miniature Graphite work- which makes up a large portion of my work these days, so much so that it has it's OWN page, at http://www.lessthansix.com. |
